Hallett Cove Conservation Park is a well-preserved time capsule of the past 600 million years The park contains one of the most important and visually-interesting records of the Permian ice age. This ice age occurred about 280 million years ago when Australia was part of Gondwana, the southern super-continent which was positioned over the present South Pole.
The glaciated pavement at Black Cliff is clear evidence of Hallett Cove's ancient glacial past. The Glacial pavement and sediments associated with the glaciation have aroused world-wide interest.
Hallett Cove has been declared a Geological Monument because of its significance for educational and scientific purposes.
