A peasant rebellion, the so-called Cudgel War, was fought in the area of Finland in 1596 - 1597.
The war started in Southern Ostrobothnia when peasants decided to give up paying taxes to nobility for upkeeping an army. The peasants took up arms to defend their decision. As they had no firearms they armed themselves with bows, spears and cudgels. So, the Cudgel War between the peasants and the soldiers commanded by the nobility started. The purpose of the rebellion was to defend their independence and to take back the property that had been illegally taken from them by the nobility. The whole Cudgel War ended up in complete defeat for the peasants, but before that it enlarged also to other parts of Finland (Central and Northern Ostrobothnia, Häme and Savo).
When Finland became an independent country the people of the Civil Guard started to plan setting up memorials for the Cudgel War. The project started in 1920 and in 1924 there was an inaugural ceremony for Ilkka's Statue in Ilmajoki.

Information of the Gudgel War.
As a memorial to men of the Cudgel War a huge block of stone was drawn on Shrove Tuesday in 1925 from Käräjävuori (in Kurikka) to Kapalankangas (in Ilmajoki). About 300 men of the Civil Guard from Ilmajoki and parishes nearby dragged with ropes a sturdy sleigh, in which the stone (250 tons in weight) was taken into its' placement, where the artist, architect Matti Visanti sculptured it. The last battle of the Cudgel War - the battle of Santavuori - was fought in the same place. Nearly one thousand peasants lost their lives in that tragic battle. President Relander honoured with his presence the unveiling ceremony of the Memorial of the Cudgel Men.
The coordinates take you to the parking place, where you can leave your car (beside the fence on the roadside, but don't block the bicycle way).
There are two dates in the monument.
Take two first numbers of the larger year = a.
The larger year is b, the lesser is c.
The coordinates of the cache are N 62° 40.0xx, where xx = the last two number of the parking place coordinates + a.
And E 022° 26.zzz, where zzz = the coordinate of the parking place -[{(b-c):2} +50].

Paikka: Koskenkorva, Ilmajoki. (kyllä, Koskenkorvan tehdas on aivan lähellä!).
Nuijasodaksi kutsuttu sota käytiin suomessa 1596 - 1597.
Tuolloin päättivät Etelä-Pohjanmaan suomenkielisten pitäjäin talopojat lopettaa linnaleirin maksamisen sotaväelle ja puolustaa päätöstään asein. Tästä ratkaisusta sai alkunsa nuijasodan nimellä tunnettu talonpoikaiskapina aateliston komentamaa sotaväkeä -aatelisia ja talonpoikaisia ratsumiehiä- vastaan. Kapinan tarkoituksena oli itsenäisyyden puolustaminen ja siinä vaiheessa erityisesti aateliston ja ratsutilallisten linnaleirin avulla keräämän omaisuuden hankkiminen takaisin. Kapina kukistettiin verisesti, mutta ennen sitä se ehti laajentua yleiseksi kansannousuksi Pohjanmaalla, Hämeessä ja Savossa.
Itsenäisyyden alkuvuosina suojeluskuntalaiset alkoivat suunnitella nuijasodan muistomerkkien pystyttämistä. 1920 hanke pantiin vireille ja 1924 vietettiin Ilmajoella Ilkan patsaan vihkiäisjuhlaa, josta muodostui todellinen kansanjuhla.

Nuijamiesten muistomerkkiä varten vedettiin laskiaistiistaina 1925 valtava kivipaasi miesvoimin Kurikan Käräjävuoresta Kapalankankaalle. Viitisensataa suojeluskuntalaista Ilmajoelta ja lähipitäjistä kiskoi köysillä tukevatekoista rekeä, jolla 250 tonnin painoinen kivenjärkäle hinattiin sijoituspaikalleen, jossa paaden suunnitellut taiteilija Matti Visanti veisti sen valmiiksi. Paikalla käytiin 24.2.1597 Nuijasodan viimeinen taistelu, Santavuoren taistelu, jossa kaatui tuhatkunta talonpoikaa. Presidentti Relander puolisoineen kunnioitti läsnäolollaan Nuijamiesten muistomerkin paljastusjuhlaa.
Koordinaatit ovat p-paikalle, johon voit jättää auton (tien reunaan aidan viereen, älä kuitenkaan tuki pyörätietä).
Muistomerkissä on kaksi vuosilukua.
