John W. Whisman (b. 1810) was a pioneer stage coach line
operator after whom the Whisman school district was named.
Originally formed in 1869, the Whisman school district was merged
in 2001 with the Mountain View school district. The Whisman
name appears on a number of other local public works including a
school, a park, a street, and the nearby sports center.
The cache is a whimsically camoed peanut butter jar, initially
filled mainly with various trinkets I have collected from other
caches. Crittenden School is located on the other side of the
baseball field, so muggles may be expected at certain times of the
day. The original contents of the original cache were:

October 7, 2005. The original cache was
lost when its hiding place was obliterated. I located a
similar place nearby and hid a similar replacement cache
there. The posted coordinates have been updated.
July 1, 2006. The replacement cache
disappeared. I constructed a second replacement cache and hid
it in the same place. Since people who are looking in exactly
the right place are having trouble finding the cache, I raised the
difficulty to 1.5 stars.
September 13, 2006. The second
replacement cache was lost when its hiding place was
obliterated. Sigh. I located a similar place nearby and
hid the third replacement cache there. The posted coordinates
have been updated.
May 24, 2007. The third replacement
cache was lost when its hiding place was obliterated.
Sigh. Again. Given the effort put out by the forces of
chaos to extirpate whatever hiding place this cache happens to
occupy, I was tempted to transfer the cache into a stand of poison
oak. But that would be too whimsical, so I restrained
myself. Instead, I located a reasonably similar hiding place
nearby and hid the fourth replacement cache there. The posted
coordinates have been updated.
November 30, 2007. The fourth
replacement cache disappeared. Perhaps that hiding place was
a little too exposed. I found a slightly more concealed
hiding place a few feet away and hid the fifth replacement cache
there. The posted coordinates have been updated.
April 16, 2008. The fifth replacement
cache disappeared, presumably by falling off into the ivy, and I
hate ivy. Okay, that place definitely did not work.
Let's go back to a hanging hide, perhaps the fence? Moved a
few feet away and hid the sixth replacement cache there. The
posted coordinates have been updated.
