Profitis Ilias or prophet Elias is a name one will find on many places
on the greek continent and on all of its numerous islands. The greek Orthodox
religion still is very important in the lifes of most of the greek people. And
the prophet Elias as well.
On the island Rhodes we have spotted at least 4 markings on the map withe the
name Profitas Ilias, of which two are the name of a mountait top:
-Profitas Ilias near Salakos, 798 m.
-Profitis Ilias near Archangelos, 516 m.
On both mountains we placed a cache.
When placing the caches, we had in mind a cacheroute by foot , hiking,
rambling ..... - as we love to do ourselves !
For the discription of the route we will refer to the german walking guide: Rother
Wanderfuhrer: Rhodos.
This cache can be done by car, too !
Starting point of this hike is at the -not easily found- chapel Agios
Ioannis Prodhromos in the south/center of Archangelos, elev. 165 m.. ==>
Rother Wanderfuhrer: Rhodos , routes 11 or 14 (the
Kinderspielplatz/Kindergarten is not recognisable as such!) . People are very
helpfull and may very well be able to point out the start of the route onto the
mountain as this is used in a yearly pilgrimage to the chapel on
top of the mountain. The route is marked by red dots and
cairns(/Steinmanner/steenmannetjes) and starts with a not too strenuous climb of
about 1 hour.
At the top there is a great 360° view over a great part of the
island.
The cache is hidden at the above mentioned coords ,elev.505 m. Not far
from the topsign. (Spoiler!)
Hikers can take the complete described route or go back the same way.
For those who do not like to walk : the top can be reached by -any- car too,
using a steep narrow winding road - partly black top, partly dirtroad. At N
36 12.682 E 28 05.870 it bears off of the Lindos Highway
directly west of Archangelos: opposite from a busstop next to a source. Ignore
the first two forks: go up. Further on the road is closed from 20.00 - 07.00
hours.
