1st Period - Geography:
UPDATE: Since Sprint merged with Nextel, they have taken down
the signs with the answers to the history section. Until I get time
to create another puzzle for this piece of the mystery, I'll give
you the answers to the history section. You can skip Geography,
solve history before leaving the house and have the cooridnates for

Interstate 80 is the 2nd longest US National Highway at 2899.5
miles and crosses through 11 states from New Jersey to
California.
I attended college in 2 of the states that I-80 passes through.
The last 6 letters of my log in are the name of a collection or
loose confederation of tribes or one geographically segmented tribe
– opinions differ on the interconnectedness of these tribes. The
confederation was made up mainly of the Kaskakia, Peoria, Cahokia,
Tamaroa and Michigamea tribes. The current day name of the state is
based on what the French explorers called the collection of these
people. You are looking for the state that is home to the
University where the athletic teams play under the nickname found
in my log-in name.
The 2nd college I attended uses the nickname “Anteaters”. The
Anteater was voted to be the mascot after suggestions were
solicited from the student body in 1965. The Anteater edged out the
Golden Bison, Roadrunner and Unicorn. You are looking for the state
that is home to the school with Anteaters as their athletic
mascot.
If you were to travel on I-80 between these 2 states, how many
states would you drive through, including both the beginning and
ending states.
Final Exam:The coordinates to the first campus visit are:
N 38 AB.93E
W 094 FG.HIJ
Where A = the number of letters in the name of the 2nd state I
attended college divided by 2.
B = the number of letters in the name of the 1st state I attended
college divided by 2.
E = the number of states you pass through on I-80 between the 2
states (including both beginning and ending states).
F = the number of times the letter “O” appears in the tribe names
mention above.
G = F times F
H = the first digit in the total mileage of Interstate 80.
I = G
J = the number of letters in the name of the 1st state I attended
college
2nd Period - History
The coordinates from Geography should put you roughly near an
intersection on a campus in the area. You will not have to leave
your car for this class. Please be mindful of pedestrians as they
have the right of way at all times. Travel counterclockwise around
the campus loop (starting toward the North). The road makes a
continuous loop and returns you to the starting point for this
class where you can exit.
On the parking garage signs, you will see names of 6 famous
Americans associated in some way with the area (Kansas/ Missouri /
Kansas City). Make sure to write down each of the names that you
see. Spelling counts.
Final Exam:
Coordinates to Your next Class are:
N 38 54.ABC
W 094 38.XYZ
Where A = the number of letters in the longest last name minus
1.
B = the number of names of the 6 that are past US presidents.
C = the number of letters in the shorter last name of the 2 US
presidents names.
X = of the names that are not US presidents, what is the average
number of letters in their names.
Y and Z are both equal to the number of letters in the persons last
name that ends in “e”.
3rd Period – Art
Coordinates from the last class should lead you to a 10 foot
tall sculpture. Find the name of the artist. Using this numbering
scheme, answer the questions below.
1 2 3
First Name
4 5 6 7 8
Last Name
Coordinates to your next class which on another nearby campus –
different one than your first visit:
N 38 PQ.RST
W 094 U9.XYZ
Where P = find the letter in position 2 of the artist’s name.
How far down in the alphabet is this letter (A=1, B=2, C=3,
etc.)
Q is the same as P
R = the number of times the letter “R” occurs in the artists name –
both first and last.
S = the position of the last occurrence of “E”
T = the position of the last occurrence of the letter “M”
U = the number of letters in his first name.
X = the position of the first occurrence of the letter “M”
Y = The number of times the letter “S” occurs in his name.
Z = The sum of all of the positions where M appears in the artist’s
name.
4th Period – Engineering. – Don’t worry, it’s more like
simple math.
This should lead you to an aluminum sculpture. There is a plaque
below the sculpture that describes the dimensions of it. If this
were a solid block of aluminum, how much would it weigh.
The density of Aluminum is 168.55 lbs per cubic foot.The weight
in lbs should be an even number that is 5 digits long.
Coordinates to your next class:
N 38 54.ABC
W 094 38.DEF
Where A = the sum of the 1st two digits of your answer
B = the first digit
C = the 3rd digit minus the 4th digit
D = the fifth digit of you answer
E = the 2nd digit
F = the first digit minus the 4 th digit
5th Period – Biology
You should now be standing in front of 12 plaster casts of
animal footprints. The common and Latin names are provided at the
site – no prework is necessary.
If Anas platyrhyncos is in position 1, Castor Canadenis is
position 6. Odocoileus virginianus is in position 7 and Ardea
herodias is in position 12.
The final cache:
N 38 AB.CDE
W 094 FG.HIJ
A = position of Melagris
B = Procyon lotor
C = Meleagris
D = didelphis
E = Odocoileus virginianus
F = vulpes vulpes
G = Marmota monax
H = didelphis
I = Anas platyrhynchas
J = Marmota monax
Graduation
From the animal prints, head West on the trail and follow your
GPSr to the final coordinates. You will pass very close to the
cache from the concrete path. In fact, it may be good to look
across the creek where your GPS is pointing but DO NOT CROSS. This
will give you a very good clue of what you will be looking for on
the other side. You will need to pass up crossing the creek and
continue west until you find a bridge. Cross there and double back
to the final coordinates. The “double back” side of the creek is
sometime heavily grown over (waist high grass, low hanging vines,
etc.)
Original contents included a Texas Longhorns bottle opener,
Kansas State playing cards, an Illinois Travel bug, and other
miscellaneous gear from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma State. Please
try to keep with the theme or at least write in the log book what
your favorite college team is.I don’t want to give away what the
container is (let’s just say you’ll know it is mine).
It is bright orange and blue so please hide it very well. There
are signs of “civilization” passing through here at times and if it
is not hidden in the same manner as it is found it could easily be
muggled. Due to the high visibility colors, I have had to drape the
cache under a black cloth – that is all I can tell you.
