Extreme Challenge - Tunnel of Terror

[This cache has had rather a long history: Originally placed by Panic in 2004, adopted by Leja9165 for a while, then adopted by Doppelfrog in 2012. The bulk of the listing text is the original, with some small updates for revised formula, extra information etc.]

I noticed that most of the caches in the ACT are rather tame compared to some I encountered in the United States. I thought it would be nice to have a cache that offers a bit more of a challenge than your average cache, while being possible. This cache is based on This cache in the United States and others like it. This cache is not so difficult for someone experienced in the sort of challenges involved.

For this cache to remain an extreme challenge your logs should not contain clues to the locations of stage 2 and 3. Please keep this in mind when writing logs or posting pictures.

Recommended equipment for this cache: Walking shoes that can get wet, reliable torch, hat or helmet, extra batteries, second reliable torch.

Stage 1

At your starting point you will find the entrance to something that will obviously require some of your equipment to proceed further. Enter one of the two entrances. Someone has nicely left some directions here in blue that mostly consists of two 4 letter words. Proceed.

In due course you will come to a well lit room. Follow the blue instructions into the largest passage. Keep going on through the chamber and into the passage beyond. It gets a bit steeper. Eventually you will reach the light and what used to be a tricky exit. Up the ladder, and take a reading here with GPSr in hand as you get as close to the exit as you can. You will notice something unusual about your height which is pure coincidence believe me. Unfortunately at this point, you will need to retrace your steps all the way back to your starting point. (Things used to be different...)

Now to calculate the start of Stage 2

For the purposes of this calculation we will consider that the last digit of both your south and east reading is a 1. EG if your reading was 35 22.222 adjust it to 35 22.221

Your location at the end of stage 1 is considered to be 35 ab.cc1 149 cd.ef1.
To work out the start of Stage 2 it will be 35 AB.CDA 149 EF.GHI

As you can see, some of the number are the same and case is relevant. It is important to note that ‘A’ may not be the same numeral as ‘a’.

A=a-1. B=e. C=b. D=d. E=c. F=f. G=a. H=e-1. I=a multiplied by d.

Stage 2

Parking is not easily available near Stage 2. Consider walking the final hundred meters or so to it. This stage is best done during daylight on week ends or after business hours.
At this point you will find a feature unique to this sort of facility. If you can not get past it, then maybe you need to find someone who can. Proceed on. Eventually you will come to a low section. Here you will be offered two passages. Go right. You should see daylight down a side passage. Crawl out. Try avoid getting dirty and wet. It’s possible.

Emerge here and take note of the name of the nearest street. The first two letters should match the first two letters of the clue in blue of stage 1. Convert these letters to their corresponding numeric number from the alphabet. EG A=1, J=10.

The coordinates of the final stage of this cache are 35 ZY.78Z 149 WY.ZYV

Z=the second letter of the street name minus 4.
Y=the first letter of the street name minus 3.
X=the third letter of the street name minus 6.
W=zero
V=the second letter of the street name.

Stage 3

Here you will have to get your feet wet and stoop a bit. Take either passage. Head south. You will eventually reach a chamber. Watch your head. When you get to the main chamber, keep going past the rudely named twin tunnels to a second chamber. Take the low tunel on the right about 30 metres to a grille room. The cache is in the ceiling just before the end of the pipe.

Please DO NOT photograph the bats! It's really bad for their health :(
