Geocache Description:

Try your hand at spelunking unmapped limestone solution caves.

The caves are located near Hammondvale. This is just one of many ways to get there:

From Highway 1 take Exit 175 to Norton/Apohaqui. At the stop sign turn left onto Hwy 865 South. While traveling this road why not check out “Another Magnetic Hill – This one’s free!!!” You’ll be driving down (or is it really up?) the hill enroute to the caves. Drive past Cassidy Lake and the PCS Potash Mine then turn left onto Hwy 111 East, heading towards Sussex. Go 300m past the Saddleback Road and look on the right. A handmade sign (and Canadian flag) is at the start of the footpath [N 45° 32.789’ W 65° 32.417’]. Park on the other side of the road opposite the “Tabor’s Caves” sign. The landowner, Mr. Glen Tabor, has posted other signs. One asks for children to be accompanied by adults. Another says “Enter at own risk”. There’s a glass pickle jar for visitors to leave a donation, if they chose.

The first cave is only a few meters down the path on the left. It’s at the base of a limestone face. The entrance may have a small trickle of water running into it. If you walk past the first cave a grouping of sinks intersect the path. Continue following the path until you come to a drop-off. A steel cable prevents you from going over the edge. At the base of the drop-off is the second cave area. There may be water flowing from a stream into one of the 2 entrances. These openings are very tight (big people need not try to enter). There are karst features in the stream that runs into the base of the rock wall.

These caves are not mentioned in the Natural Resources and Energy publication “THE CAVES OF SOUTHEASTERN NEW BRUNSWICK”. Ursa Minor and I have not taken the time to explore these caves but we intend to. Of the two openings, the first one near the beginning of the path looks promising.

The cache is located approx 70m from the second cave. GPSr WAAS accuracy was 6m when the cache was stashed. Cache is a spaghetti container wrapped in a plastic bag.

PLEASE TAKE THE APPROPRIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IF EXPLORING THE CAVES.

Happy spelunking!

Original contents of the cache:

• Logbook (with pen & pencil)
• Travel Bug JEEP 4X4
• Unopened package of 1983 Return of the Jedi trading cards – Jabba the Hut wrapper
• 4 piece manicure set
• Harmonica (new & unused)
• Fingernail tattoos
• Cell phone case
• Package of 12 coloured pencils
• Toyota Rav4 clock keychain
• Gecko “Beanie”
• Pendant, necklace & earring set
• Handmade leather coin purse

Another cave and virtual cache, “The Amazing Caverns of Kitt’s Cave” by Doctor Livingstone, is just down the road. Kitt’s Cave is truly amazing. Probably the best cave to explore in southern NB. It’s easy to enter and has large chambers inside. If you have the time, check it out.
