On Aug 27th at 12:45am my mom passed away after complications from cancer surgury. Just over a year ago I lost my stepfather. This cache is about memories (in my case the memory of my mom) and taking the opportunity to slow down and reflect on some memory from your life.
Share your chosen memory (anything from your life - this is not meant to be a memorial cache) by writing about it in the logbook. The cache contains only a logbook and two pens; no trade items please. If I may suggest: be detailed in the logbook and brief on the cache page. Take your time, enjoy the scenery.
To find the cache:
First, after getting your vehicle in line for the ferry, you will need to take a short walk to 49°10.043N 123°55.924W After selling the house on Gabriola Island 15 years ago mom lived in the building you are infront of and shared the same view that you now enjoy. Locate a number that is spelled out on the nearby sign (eg: zero) then get back to your vehicle.
The listed coordinates are where you can park and get access to the beach. Use caution as the rocks can be slippery in the winter and do not try this cache on a high tide.
Just behind you is a blue gate and a fence; Mottishaw lives next door. When I was growing up there was no fence and certainly no need for a gate. It used to be Lot 39 but not any more; note the address of our old house.
Add together the first digit of the address and the word number from Nanaimo. Add this to the decimal minutes of latitude of the listed coordinates.
Take the last two digits of the address and reverse them. Subtract that two digit number from the decimal minutes of longitude of the listed coordinates..
You will find the cache in rocky spot on the beach. Please rehide carefully.
Turn your walk into a circle:
Continue along the beach past our old house at 49°11.971N 123°51.540W to a public access trail at 49°11.945N 123°51.540W that leads back to the road. An old rope to help you and a piece of orange flagging on a branch will confirm your location. Once at the road look left and you should see your vehicle.
