[NEDERLANDS - English text below]
Heden
alfabet (dus a=1, z=26, enz.).
zichtbaar is. Veel plezier en succes !
[ENGLISH - Nederlandse tekst hierboven]
The chapel of Our Lady of Ter Eecken is already
mentioned in early accounts of the town of Hulst.
In 1578 the chapel is destroyed by the Sea Beggars, only to be
rebuilt in 1632 on behalf of the dean Cardon. Many sought healing
of fevers and diseases there, turning the chapel into a place of
pilgrimage.
In the Eighty Years War, in particular during the siege of 1645 by
Frederic Henry of Nassau, the chapel was used as the headquarters
of the Spanish troops. By 1690 it had been demolished because of
serious decay.
Around 1933 the foundations of "Ye Olde Chapel" (regional Dutch :
d'Ou Kapel) were discovered. It was decided to rebuild it. Today
the chapel of Ter Eecken is visited by about 30 of the devout every
day who come here to light a candle or to pray.
In 1990 chapel and garden were restored by local volunteers.
They've done an excellent job.
It's in the small garden you need to seek a few
clues to find the cache.
Go to the above coordinates. This is alongside national trunkroad
N60 Hulst/Sint-Niklaas. You may park at N 51° 15.366 E 4°
03.927.
This is a functioning place of prayers so
please show some respect. There's no problem whatsoever to
visit the garden or even the chapel itself (the latter is open in
summer daily from 9am til 8pm, in winter daily from 9am til 5pm) -
it belongs to the cultural heritage of the town of Hulst - but
please keep it serene.
In the garden - so *not* in or on the chapel ! -
you'll see a few sculptures (mostly bas-reliefs). On these
sculptures you find :
1) The name of a country (Dutch spelling !)
2) The name of a Belgian city (Dutch spelling !)
3) The first names of a sculptor and a saint
What do you do with these ?
1) Each letter of that name gets the value of its place in the
alphabet (so a=1, z=26, etc.). Add up all these values, then deduct
35. The outcome of that calculation is XX.
2) Count the number of letters in this name. That number is
Y.
3) The difference between the two names you're looking for, is one
letter only. Its place in the alphabet *plus* half of the number of
letters in the longest name makes up Z.
The cache is located at N 51° 15.XX6 E 4°
03.YZ1. This is cache without trading materials so you don't need
to bring any items. However, coins and small TBs do fit. May I ask
you to bring your own pencil to fill in the log ? Thank you.
Whilst searching/logging, please watch out for
eventual passers-by. This place can be very quiet but also very
busy. Perhaps it's better to not log on the spot. Afterwards,
please firmly close the lid of the canister and hide it high enough
again so it's not too visible from below. Have fun and good luck
!
