Geocache Description:

This cache is a small ammo can, hidden at the site where the Hull Mountain Lookout used to be, in the Mendocino National Forest.

The original Hull Mountain lookout was built in the 1930's, by the Civilian Conservation Corp. It was then re-built in 1974, using a wood hexagonal 9' design by a Washington Office Architect by the name of Robert Sandusky and replaced with this design at the request of the Forest Supervisor who was inclined to experiment with a more modern design over the long standard 14' X 14' square buildings. As it turned out because of the attractiveness of lookout and modern architecture this design was chosen for the USFA-NASA solar demonstration tower.

The lookout was burned down in the winter of 1994. There was snow on the ground and the fire was started in the center of the wood floor which would probably have been vandals. No one was apprehended or charged with the arson.

This was a live-in tower with a cab. The tower was about 5' off the ground on a rock outcropping. There are foundation pilings and remnants of the tower still remaining. The Lookout sat at an elevation of 6873 feet.

You will have to traverse dirt roads to get there. Then there is a short hike/walk up to the site. Drive safely, because there are no Tow Trucks nearby. Use good judgment traveling these roads, and especially when turning your vehicle around.

As always, use caution when walking in, or poking around rocks in this area. You never know when reptiles might be hiding out!
