Geocache Description:

At the end of Samaria Gorge, where the GPS works!

You can have done the tourist route from the top of the gorge, or take the boat trip from Hora Sfakio. The hamlets on the inhospitable and, until recently, remote, South coast of Crete have played a role throughout history in fighting the invaders of Crete (Arabs, Venetians, Turks, Germans), being so remote. Even the gorge has sheltered the villagers and freedom fighters. "History of Crete" by Prof Theocharis E. Detorakis will help here. There is a small church, within the remains of an older church in the village of Ag Roumeli. A wonderful gorge and a fascinating ride on the ferry. Microcache, with coins etc. I have altered the Terrain rating to take the trek down the gorge into account. When setting it, I arrived and left by boat, a somewhat easier option! Thank you for replacing the log Hatschepsut & Tomsle! Could any cacher kind enough please replace log? July 09 sounds like a good time.

Small note on cache maintenance: Cache was left on vacation, Greek geocacher kenezos will assist with maintenance when he visits from the mainland. However, if a cache finder sees the cache to be in poor condition please remove it and log "needs archived". Thanks!

There may be two caches now (29/5/10), either will do or one could be removed by someone who finds both!
