Geocache Description:

Jellicoe Point is a lovely lakeside rest/picnic area approximately midway between Taupo & Turangi

Looking out to the lake one sees Motutaiko, the lake's only major island. Fortified by the local Tuwharetoa people in times of war it was later used as a burial ground. During December to January the island is flushed red by flowering pohutakawa, a tree more common in coastal areas.

The area was named after Lord Jellicoe, who was Governor General of N.Z. 1920 - 24. A keen sportsman this spot was a favourite camp site for his fresh water fishing.

The cache holds nothing more than a pencil and some notepaper on which to record your visit.
