Fables, Myths & Legends .. Shropshire's Robin Hood Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Team Maddie UK: After 2 DNF's I went over to check on this cache. Not only is the cache missing but the little copse where it had been located is missing. It would appear that not only the castle is having renovations but they are taking down/digging up most of the trees in the area as well.
I looked around for another suitable location but none appeared at this time. Maybe after the construction is finished we will consider replacing the cache but not as part of the Fables Myths and Legends series.
I will publish the location of the final cache later today as it is no longer going to be possible to find it without these missing co-ordinates

Geocache Description:

This cache is situated within sight of Whittington Castle in Northern Shropshire. A visitor car park at N 52 52.421 W 003 00.203 has a fee of 30p on an honour system. The cache is in a small black tupperware container. There is no need to go through barbed wire.

This is one of the three base level Fables, Myths and Legends series of caches. The coordinates above are correct. On the reverse side of the usual Geocaching card inside the cache container is a key which you will have to record (please don't remove the card).

The instructions for the final cache 'King Arthur's View' explain how to use this key along with the others recorded at the remaining two base level caches to arrive at the final coordinates for 'King Arthur's View' itself. In addition, this cache has an extra clue enabling you to determine the multiplier X required for calculating the final coordinates for 'King Arthur's View'. Follow the instructions on the inside of the cache lid.

The Other Caches Are:

Fables, Myths and Legends ... The Lost Mermaid - Base level cache

Fables, Myths & Legends .. Ogo's Hole - Base level cache

Fables, Myths & Legends ... King Arthur's View - The Final Cache

Much has been written about Whittington Castle. One story concerns Fulk (II) Fitzwarine whose father was Lord of the castle. Fulk II grew up in the court of King Henry II along with the King's sons and notably did not get on well with John. On his father's death, Fulk II became Lord of the castle but, on becoming King, John took Whittington Castle from Fulk and gave it to Morys de Powis. Fulk then embarked on a long series of adventures across the country. Many of these involve 'robbing from the rich and giving to the poor'. There are more than just a few similarities between Fulk's life and that of the legendary 'Robin Hood' and some have suggested that it was he who inspired the stories. Thus the cache name 'Shropshire's Robin Hood'. More can be read about this and other stories at the following link:

Here you will find among the pages suggested links to the Holy Grail and Merlin's prophesies which may have been in reference to Fulk Fitz Warine.

The original cache contents are 'Captain Morgan's Gold Coin TB; Fridge magnet; Bookmark; Pen; Shropshire Badge; Child's Book; Other assorted items.

There are several events held around the castle and we will post logs to let you know when these are. So make sure and check them out before you go. Also, beware of muggles.
