Geocache Description:

Fourth in a series of 5 exploring the Mani region of Greece

Situated on a rocky acropolis just south of Stoupa in the hamlet of Lefktron, this was once the site of a sanctuary to the goddess Athena, but traces of that building have long since gone. In 1252 a castle was built here by William de Villehardouin during the Frankish occupation of the Peloponnese, but little remains of that except some remnants of the stone bases. However the top gives good views up and down the coast, the coastal plain, and then the backdrop of the mountains behind. There are a couple of footpaths leading up to the summit but the easiest is from behind the small chapel alongside the coastal road. A slight word of warning though, watch out for snakes, for although they will shoot off at the sight of you, the one I saw when placing the cache was a good metre long, and not venomous. The cache is a 35mm black film cannister containing log sheets, Geocache Info, and some assorted coins, but no pencil, please bring your own.
