Geocache Description:

Again the central CT cachers are sponsoring a canoe/kayak/land event for one and all. Hammonasset Beach State Park offers something for everyone: Beach, Picnic grounds, Camping, Hiking, Biking, Kite flying, Roller blading, Canoe/Kayaking, Fishing, Crabbing and of course, GEOCACHING. The listed coordinates are for the Picnic/Camping areas.

Saturday, September 11th with a rain date of the 12th.

As in all the past events, the food will be pot luck, bring your favorite dish with enough to share with others. Food never seems to be a problem at these events, except too much!! Please post what you will be bringing so we may keep a running list. That way we all don't bring the same thing (fat chance of that). Lunch will start at 2:00 p.m. to give the boat people time to get back. We are relocating the picnic to the camp grounds to eliminate the transfer of cooking equipment and food.

Park Entrance, N41* 16.431 / W072* 33.685

Camping area, N41*16.008 / W072*33.558

Day parking, N42*15.999 / W072*33.611

Good news on camping: the park is going to reserve a section of the campground for us to use exclusively for the event. We have been assigned the Mohawk Camp Ground with spill over into the Quinnipiac. The coordinates for the camp ground and Picnic sites have been revised. (See the Camp ground web page for more details and maps) We will also be able to have our picnic lunch in the camp ground and for those coming for the day they will be able to enter the park, head to the west beach and park next to the camp area. No need for them to park in the visitors lot and walk.

Campers, when you register at the Office, tell them you are with the CT. Geocaching Party and they will assign you a site.

Fires

Fires are permitted in portable fireplaces. Bring your own or rent one. Ground fires are strictly prohibited at all State campgrounds. The use of camp stoves is encouraged. Grills are not provided at Hammonasset Beach Campground however for a fee, you can rent a fire tub with cement blocks at the camp store.

The water related caches will be best accessed by launching in the Hammonasset River (no fee) outside the park at N 41* 17.388 / W* 072 33.833.

Shuttle Schedule/Instructions:

Drop your kayak/Boat and gear off at N 41* 17.388 / W* 072 33.833 and drive your vehicle to the Clinton Town Dock at N41*16.149 / W72*31.846 or the RT. 1 River crossing at N41*16.588 / W72*32.749. Maps will be provided. We will drive you back to the launch site to start your journey.

The shuttle will be leaving the Town Dock at 9:30 a.m. and stopping at the bridge before returning to the launch site. You may find it more convenient to team up with another cacher who shares your time table. Keep in mind, the tide is high at 9:25 a.m. and low at 3:24 on the 11th.

KID’S ACTIVITIES:

11 AM “Weird Science”

School is back in session! Come to Weird Science Class and participate in some cool experiments. Every kid should know how to make slime! Did you know that there was a mini-volcano that is ready to erupt at Hammonasset? Come have some fun and you might even learn a little.

After Lunch "Captain Kid’s Treasure"

Recently, new clues as to the location of Captain Kidd’s treasure have been uncovered. Certain documents found by local geocachers stored in the Mystic Seaport archives point to the possibility of the treasure being buried at Hammonasset! Captain Kidd was a pirate known to have plied the waters of Long Island Sound. A recently discovered document written by a local whaling captain sheds some light on a possible location for the hidden treasure. Come and help make sense of the clues so the group can locate the loot.
