The Most Remote Place in the Northern Sandia Mountains was
determined by Kurt Menke, a Geographic Information Specialist. It
is defined as the spot that is farthest in from the boundaries of
the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. The original hunt for the Northern
MRP was described in an article in the Albuquerque Journal on June
10, 2004.
The cache is hidden within 20 feet of the actual MRP, and the
specific spot for the cache was selected because it is in a small
clearing. The cache is within 100 feet of the North Crest Trail.
You can hike to the location from the north from the Tunnel Spring
trailhead, or from the south from the parking area at Sandia Crest.
As the name suggests, the cache is in a very remote part of the
mountain. Stay on well established trails (the Crest Trail) until
you are within 100 feet of the cache. You do not want to get lost
in this area of the mountain!
The cache is hidden within wickedly thick Gambel oak trees.
Bushwhacking to the cache is not a lot of fun. You can turn off of
the Crest Trail at N35 15.671, W106 26.655 and make your way up a
small gully toward the cache, which avoids the thickest of the
trees.
If you have trouble finding the cache due to the thick tree
coverage, use the hint below.
