This cache has been archived.

Happy Humphrey: Now archived: a new version is planned which will be just as difficult, but less dependent on the weather and boat timetables. Thanks for the logs - watch this space!

Geocache Description:

An adventure designed for the patient, determined and agile! The first section requires the use of a boat, as the intermediate cache is on the Calf of Man (the waypoint given above should help with this). The second section is very steep in places, and should only be attempted when the rock is dry and the weather calm.

A very difficult but very rewarding challenge, taking you on a journey around one of the most stunningly beautiful and exciting areas of the British Isles.

The first section will only be possible in good weather, probably only between May and September. although boats do go across there on calm days in the winter. The waypoint obtained from Water Margin Part 2 leads to a well-hidden 35mm film canister which has another waypoint near the final cache visible inside it (it doesn't need to be opened). On the way there, you'll have the opportunity to get to know a rarely-visited remote place (and log some locationless caches as well!).

There are some extra waypoints given for the final section to guide you through the steep ground. Although a steep and faint path leads down almost to sea level, there is a tricky rock barrier to overcome before reaching the area of the cache, and the extra waypoints should help as there is a safe line through. You'll need to use both hands in many places, and it's not suitable for children or dogs. In fact, if you're not experienced with steep scrambling this is not a suitable cache for you. There is no mobile phone reception here either, so please take great care if you attempt it, tell someone else where you're going and preferably don't go on your own.

If you’re put off by the look of the initial descent, take the "white feather" and turn back as it gets no easier below, but if you get that far then please log a DNF.

The extra waypoints are as follows.

If the co-ordinates given by the film canister are N 54º XX.ABC, W 004º YY.DEF,
calculate the waypoints as shown below (XX and YY stay the same).

Begin at the location given by the film canister. This is at the fence about thirty yards from the lower corner of the field: you can see a faint path in the grass just over the fence,
Next, head down slowly and carefully, going down a steep loose path, then right down steep grass to a flat grassy area then steep rocks to
ABC - 8, DEF + 37
Now, along awkward rock to
ABC - 12, DEF + 15.
The far side of the gully looks impossible at first, but well up the landward side, above the tide line, is a weakness going up and slightly right. After noting where the top of the climb out of the gully leads (it's hard to find on the return journey), go down, round the corner, then up to the cache site, at
ABC - 28, DEF + 7.
