Geocache Description:

Dunedin's glow-worms appear to be a well-kept secret in an easily-accessible area.

In this cache you combine a visit to these little worms with a hunt for some man-made fireflies, or 'Firetacks' as they're known.

When you visit the worms, remember that they are fragile and sensitive to light:

The firetacks are reflective pins that are hard to see during the day but shine brightly in direct torchlight.

The point to remember is that they reflect directly back to the light source, so if you hold your torch at eye-level you'll see them. If you hold the torch at your side then they will stay mostly invisible!

The co-ordinates above are for the start of the track and there's parking on the west side of the bridge just past the track entrance.

The first thing to do is follow the track and visit the glow-worms. They are worth it! Remember to turn your torch off or at least keep it pointed at the ground as the glow-worms do not like the light. Then turn around and start following the track back down, holding your torch at eye-level and scanning the tree trunks. Once you find the first, stand there and scan around until you see the next firetack.

Move from tack to tack in this fashion. The final cache location is marked by a
bright orange Firetack.

The cache itself is a camo-painted, 2ltr. snaplock container, and when first placed contained:
  • Laser Pointer
  • Pack of 2 AAA batteries
  • Rear (red) bicycle light
  • Karabiner compass/clip
  • Violin rosin
A final few words of advice:
  • It's dark so take a torch and a backup!
  • Take a partner; here's a chance to introduce someone else to caching.
  • It can get VERY slippery so take things slowly.
  • Not all tacks can be seen on the return journey, so keep a track log on your GPS. Coverage can be poor but will help on the way back.
  • The terrain difficulty is 3 at night, 2 during the day.
