Famed naturalist John Muir called it Muir's Peak in the 1800's. Later it was called Wintoon Butte, Cone Mountain and now Black Butte.
Black Butte is a steep nearly treeless dome of hornblende andesite. It was formed about 10,000 years ago at about the same time as Shastina Crater on Mt. Shasta. A large crater first developed at the base of Mt. Shasta. Soon, very thick magma began to issue from the crater. Four successive eruptions of material with the consistency of cookie dough were forced above the crater rim. As the flow cooled, internal stress caused the lava to break into chunks that rolled down the side of the dome. Remnants of the solid core can be seen as crags near the summit. At the summit you will find the foundation of a fire lookout built in the 1930's and rebuilt in 1963. It operated until 1973 and was moved in 1975.
Route: 2 miles from the stop sign at Everitt Memorial Highway (near high school) turn left. Stay on the dirt road for 2.5 miles, following arrows on trees. Where the road crosses under the power line, go left for .5 miles. The parking lot is at N41 22.356 W122 20.432.
Cache is ammo box and you will have to scramble a bit to find it. Best accessed from NW side of the Lookout foundation. It is also a rather easy scramble if you go over the SE corner of the foundation, walk out about 50 feet and access the less challenging rocks to get to the cache.
