Arkeologiska undersökningar har daterat aktiviteter
på denna plats till 1200-talet. Kalksten bröts
framför allt för järnframställning, kalk
smältes tillsammans med järnmalm i masugnarna och gjorde
slagget mer lättflytande och lättare att separera
från det smälta järnet. Kalksten används
också som byggnadsmaterial och kalkstenen som brutits
här kan bland annat ha använts vid byggandet av
Gripsholms slott och klostret i Mariefred.
Området är ett naturreservat vilket bland annat
innebär att det är förbjudet att ta med sig stenar
och växter från platsen och att låta hundar och
andra husdjur gå lösa. Läs på skyltarna och

Hidden in the old limestone quarry of Kalkbro. The reception
inside the quarry might be bad and there are quite a lot of
possible locations for the cache, it's a good idea to check the
spoiler picture before you go...
The cache is hidden inside the quarry. Archeological findings
suggest that limestone was first extracted here as early as in the
13th century. Limestone was primarily used to produce iron but also
as a building material. The limestone extracted here might have
been used for building Gripsholms slott and the monastery in
Mariefred.
The place with surrounding is also a natural reserve. Thus,
among other things, it is forbidden to remove plants and rocks and
to bring dogs or other pets without a leash. Read the signs and
follow the instructions! Also watch out for falling rocks inside
the quarry.
