Five minutes on the kitchen table with a map and compass, followed by a coastal walk of approximately a mile.
Time to put the GPS to one side and get the map and compass down from the loft.
The first stage is a little bit of basic mapwork, for this you will require OS Landranger 95, a sharp pencil, and a Silva type compass (a good protractor with roamer will be okay).
The waypoint given is the start point, a well known Douglas landmark. Convert this to British grid and plot on the map. From here take a bearing of 43 degrees, follow this bearing to a trig point. Take note of the spot height.
From the trig point draw a line to grid 37027592.On this line, 0.55KM before 37027592 the line passes directly through a church. 0.55KM due north from the church is a major road junction. From this junction follow the road in a NE direction until you come to a railway station.
From here take a bearing of 324 degrees. Follow this bearing until you reach a cairn. Take a note of the spot height.
Continue on this bearing and you will cross a major road and then an intersection of a B road and a well known modern LDP. Follow the LDP in a NE direction and you will eventually come to a battlefield. Make a note of the date.
So onto the cache location (time to get the GPS out).Take the waypoint as being N 54 AB.CDE
W004 FG.HIJ
ABC = spot height one - 70 [3 figures]
DEF = spot height two + 198
GHIJ = battle date + 2528
If you find yourself on the "Raad ny Foillan" somewhere between Douglas and Castletown you know you've done your sums right.
