A short but steep climb that requires some bushwhacking. The cache is .41 miles from the lower Cienega Canyon restroom parking lot, with a remarkable surprise at the end – hence the obscure location. Elevation gain is 460 feet.
Take the Crest Highway to the Sulfur Canyon/Cienega Canyon Picnic Ground turnoff. Turn left and take an immediate left to the Cienega Canyon Picnic Area. When you arrive at a T in the road, turn right and then left into the restroom parking lot. Note: this picnic ground is closed during the winter and you will have to park at the Sulfur Canyon Picnic Ground. This adds about .5 miles to the hike.Go west out of the parking lot and hike straight up the ridge in front of you. Continue up the ridge for about ¼ mile until you reach a gully running across the ridge. The cache is .17 miles from here. There are several routes from this point that will get you to the cache, but because the area is so overgrown you’ll have to pick your way through.
