Geocache Description:

What the heck is a datum!? WGS84—whazzat mean?

IMPORTANT: Read this BEFORE entering the coordinates into your GPSr.

This is a two stage multi that will help you understand what datums are, and why it is important to be using the correct one.

A datum is simply a model of the earth used for making maps. GPS uses the WGS84 datum which stands for World Geodetic System 1984. Many maps in use today are still based upon NAD27 (North American Datum 1927). When using GPS with a map it is important to have your GPSr setup for the datum the map is based upon. If you are using the wrong datum your coordinates can be up to 200 meters off! The datum is shown in the lower left corner of most maps. USGS topo maps show UTM coordinates in the NAD27 datum and lat/long coordinates in the NAD83 datum. For all practical purposes, NAD83 is identical to WGS84.

To find this cache:
FIRST, set up your GPSr for NAD27 CONUS (continental US). THEN enter the above coordinates. If you enter the coordinates first, your GPSr will just change them when you switch datums. (Don’t forget to switch back to WGS84 before entering other caches!)

The first waypoint is a 35mm film canister containing instructions for finding the second waypoint. The second waypoint is a smallish pickle jar. Trade items need to be small. Both waypoints are near the top of Tubbs Hill. It’s a great hike with some fantastic views. I can’t believe no one has put a cache up there yet. If you find yourself doing a long uphill bushwhack to the cache, you’re doing it the hard way. If you’re on the right trail, you can get to within about 160 feet of the cache before having to leave the trail.

Additional note: I have learned that there is a letterbox near this cache. It is not a "letterbox hybrid" geocache. If you happen upon it, don't confuse it with the cache. And please be aware that the carved stamp in the letterbox is meant to remain in the letterbox. It is not a trade item.

Good luck and have fun!
