Situated near Hythe (Hants) Marina, the walk is pushchair friendly but only single width pushchairs can be pushed across the lock gates. No fences need to be crossed.
Hythe can be reached either by ferry from Town Quay Southampton or by road.
Park your car in the Short Term car park at N 50 52.368 W 001 24.033. The first 3 hours are free but read the parking instructions carefully as this concession does not apply to the entire Marina area. (3 hours should be ample time)
On your walk along the waters edge around the Marina you need to find the following
(In no particular order) and note the numbers for your Cache Coords.
· A Memorial to commemorate victory in Europe, where you will find
A number for Eling = B
And a number for George V Dock = E
· A water speed limit in knots (Add 3 to this number) = F
· A parking sign – Note the number for the maximum car parking period in the Short Term car park = A
· The 1st number of the Lifeboat = C
Finaly, replace you’re corresponding numbers with the letters in these Coords to find the Cache. N 50 AB.CAC W 001 BC.EFE
The area has a number of interesting features. You will see Hythe Pier, which has the oldest operating pier railway in the world, Hythe Marina Village with its shops, pub, restaurant, public toilets and many expensive craft.
On Southampton water look for the Container Vessels (if you have never seen one before you will be impressed), Cruise Liners,and Catamaran Ferries – it’s a busy waterway.
At one point you will have to cross the Lock gates to continue your quest. With the exception of some high tides one gate is always closed allowing pedestrians to cross. In the unlikely event of finding both gates open at high tide you will need to retrace your steps to the car park and walk around the Marina on the perimeter road to the other side of the lock.
When you reach the north corner of the Marina (near Kiss Marine),
go left along the road a few yards and take the first gravel path on your right to the top of the bank where you will find extensive views over Southampton Water,the docks and the waterfront. NOTE if this gravel incline is too steep, the cache can still be reached by continuing along the road.
As you continue along the top of the bank you will be passing the pastoral area of Dibden Bay from which this cache takes its title. This is the tract of land, which Associated British Ports (ABP) spent £45 million on in the mistaken belief that they had the right and the might to develop the waterfront, regardless of the impact upon people, wildlife and the local infrastructure.
After an extensive Public Enquiry, reason and justice prevailed and ABP lost the case.
Before you leave the area take a few minutes to walk into Hythe village and explore its many attractions, pubs, café’s, and many little shops.
