The MSJ Code Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hemlock: This cache has been brought to my attention via a "needs archived" log. This cache has been missing for over 6 months, which should be more than enough time to check on it and replace it if needed. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don't think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache.

When/if this cache is replaced, please email me at hemlock@geocachingadmin.com and I'll be more than happy to take a look at your cache again. If it is still within the guidelines for cache placement and posting, it will then be unarchived.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
Hemlock

Geocache Description:

Recently, at Mission San Jose, a piece of paper was found with cryptic symbols and strange handwriting on it.  The paper must have been written around 200 years ago, and actually gave a clue as to where a geo-cache might be hidden!

*The co-ordinates given above Are NOT the actual location of  this cache.  You MUST Follow The Instructions Given Below To Find The Actual Location.*

This is an easy terrain, multi-stage, micro, puzzle-cache consisting of a film-canister.  You will only have to leave your caching vehicle once, and, if I were you, I would print this page (including the picture of the parchment) and bring it with you (you will need the picture attached below in order to figure out where the actual cache location is).

Original contents include: A log and a small pencil; a shell ring; and, a Sacagawea US $1 gold coin for the First to Find (a gift, no need to trade).

After weeks of carefully researching the symbols and the cryptic handwriting on the paper, I discovered that the cache could be found by following these three steps:

Step 1. Arrive at the location designated by the initial co-ordinates given above. Here you will find the information needed to convert those co-ordinates into another set of co-ordinates in order to get to Step 2.
  • a) Subtract the number represented by the last two digits of the date that almost 2,000 Indians were living at the Mission, from the number represented by the last two digits of the North co-ordinate.
  • b) Add 1 to the day in June when Mission San Jose was founded and subtract the answer from the number represented by the last three digits of the West co-ordinate.
These new co-ordinates will take you to the location where you can find the information needed in order to get to Step 3.

Step 2. Arrive at the location designated by the new co-ordinates you obtained during Step 1.  Here you will find the information needed to convert these new co-ordinates into the correct new co-ordinates to find the location of Step 3.
  • a) Subtract the fourth "numeral" on the tablet from the number represented by the last four digits of the new North co-ordinate.
  • b) Subtract the fifth "numeral" on the tablet from the number represented by the last two digits of the new West co-ordinate.
This third set of co-ordinates will take you to the location of Step 3.  When you arrive there, sit down and take a break.  You deserve it!

Step 3. Are you sitting comfortably?  This is where I realized that the cryptic handwriting on the ancient parchment paper described the location of the cache!  If you can de-cipher the writing, you will have no trouble locating it.
