Stainforth Foss (Yorkshire Dales) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Pendle Witch: Unfortunately the cache appears to have been muggled and not for the first time. Within the last few years I have had to move it twice within the same locality because of muggle problems and on my last maintenance visit it had been emptied of all goodies. Regrettably I think the time has come to archive it. Many thanks to LoZheDGeHoG for photographing the site and kindly sending the photograph to me.

Geocache Description:

Park in the public car park in Stainforth off B6479 (grid reference 821673). The cache is about a forty minute round trip from here. You can also take a nice easy 3.5 mile circular walk via Langcliffe, returning to Stainforth via the Hoffman Kiln cache, at the very interesting Craven Limeworks site.

Leave the car park on the path running along side the beck to walk under the road. From the gate out of the picnic area turn left and follow the Pennine Bridleway over the railway until it exits onto a metalled lane. Head down the lane to Stainforth Bridge. This beautiful medieval packhorse bridge was a favourite haunt of Sir Edward Elgar who often visited his friend, Dr Buck in Settle. Immediately over the bridge go left over the stile sign-posted Stackhouse 1¼ and follow the footpath down the side of the river for about one hundred metres where the Ribble has cut back into the limestone to form the picturesque Stainforth Foss, a series of shallow falls and then a deeper gorge. Continue along the public footpath for another four hundred metres to locate the cache . Please do not attempt to take your car across the packhorse bridge or park anywhere along the narrow lane down to Stainforth Foss. Double yellow lines all the way down.

Also note that in peak times this is a very busy spot although the cache is hidden a little way down the Ribble, but STEALTH WILL BE REQUIRED on busy weekends and warm summer days, so please take care and re-hide it well.
