Vuonna 1639 kauppapaikaksi perustettu kaupunki sijaitsi alun perin
linnan pohjoispuolella, nykyisten Linnankasarmien alueella.
Linnankasarmien alueen puistomainen eteläosa oli sotilaskäytössä jo
ainakin 1700-luvulla. Merkittävä kaupunkikasarmialue on palvellut
sekä venäläistä että suomalaista varuskuntaa. Linnankasarmien
historiallinen rakennuskanta on suojeltu valtion omistamien

The town of Hämeenlinna, at first founded as a trading place in
1639, was originally situated north of the castle, in the area of
the present castle barracks. It was no later than the 18th century,
possibly even earlier, that the parklike southern parts of the
castle barracks area were used for military purposes. The barracks
area has played a significant role as a place for first a Russian
and then a Finnish garrison. The historical building complex has
been protected by the statute regulating the protection of
