Treasure Island - Lands End Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Big E: I decided to archive this cache (which is half of the Treasure Island/Lands End Caches) because the river and Mother Nature are too formitable for me. Heavy rains raise the river water level and in time, wash this cache down the river. I have tried to trick the river by placing the cache information inside a tree, but last time we had high water, the river took the tree and everything else away. I think it was a bad idea from the start. So, now, the Lands End cache is going solo, even though the same river is getting close to washing it away also! Thanks for past support. Ed

Geocache Description:

No parking or admission fees!

This is a Multi-Cache that will ultimately take you along established Park trails to where the Little and Middle Patuxent rivers meet.

The Part I cache contains the coordinates for Part II. It can be reached from the north via the Patuxent Branch trail parking lot at (N39 09.995, W076 50.491), or from the south at Vollmerhausen Road (N39 08.995, W76 49.975). It can also be reached via any of the paved Columbia Association walking paths in the Huntington section of King's Contrivance that lead to the Patuxent Branch trail.

DO NOT park along Vollmerhausen Road at the south end! (Serious auto accident there last year). Instead, use the Trail Parking lot 200 yards west, at N39 08.995, W76 50.060. This is also the park entry point for the Part II cache.

Note: Park regulations prohibit entering the park from any other point.

Part I is on Treasure Island in the Little Patuxent River. No bushwhacking is necessary. In summer, you can walk out to Treasure Island with low boots or bare feet. Be careful! Not for unattended children after a heavy rain.

Along the trails to Part II, you may see Blue Cranes, White Tail Deer, Beavers, Foxes, Pileated Woodpeckers, pruned American Hollies, and any number of other beautiful birds and trees. You will pass rock quarries (Patuxent Pyramids) and an old bridge pier that once carried railroad traffic to Savage Mill. You may even see the tree that wanted to be a railroad tie. You will pass the remaining, standing bridge support that once supported the Gabbro Bridge that carried railroad traffic from Guilford quarries to Savage Mill, Laurel, and points south. Take the trail south, past the bridge support, to Lands End.

The coordinates place you at a GPS-friendly area overlooking the two rivers. From that point:

- walk back about 39 steps on the same path that brought you here.At 39 steps, turn right and walk over to the large multi-trunked juniper tree; the cache is located under a flat rock at the base of that tree.

Watch for skulls and poison ivy!

Please exchange items of fair value. Carefully replace the rock cover (with the cross down) and make the area look normal.

Thanks and Good Luck.
