Tog Hill (South Glocs) Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: This location has been compromised. Whilst the cache was still safe, I decided to remove and archive since it's had a good innings but doesn't get many visits.

Thanks to the visitors.

Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache starting at a small picnic area which has fantastic views across the Severn Estuary, both bridges, Bristol, North Somerset, South Glocs and Wales. You can picnic, walk dogs and there is space for the kids to run around. This location is close to the M4 J18 (5 minutes), so you may like a journey stop here (there are toilets).

This picnic area is very close to the M4 Motorway and ideal for a stop on a journey. It has excellent views which you can see from a parked car, or a grass area to get out a walk around.

The view

It overlooks the site of the Battle of Dyrham which took place in 577AD (Saxons 3, Brits 0). There are views across South Gloucestershire, Bristol, and on a clear day the Second Severn crossing and Wales.

When you get to the co-ordinates above, use the following to calculate the final location. The final physical cache is at N 51° 27.aaa' W 002° 23.bbb' where

aaa is the height in metres of Hinton Hill minus the distance in Km to Dundry Hill plus the distance in Km to Pucklechurch Church and

bbb is the height in metres of Dundry Hill plus the height in metres of Hinton Hill minus the distance in Km to Hinton Hill

Now double-check that you've got the right units (m, Km) and your calculation to avoid a long, disappointing walk!

Once you have calculated the final location, you can either move your car to a slightly closer lay-by on the A420 (right and right from the picnic area) or leave your car here and walk through the gap in the hedge and along the verge of the A420 road. Either way, please beware the fast traffic at this busy and confusing junction.

During the day, the picnic area is busy but there have been press reports of break-ins during the evening and at night.

The walk to the cache includes a grass bank which could be slippery in wet weather (so bring wellies/stout shoes) and this final part is not suitable for dogs. The cache is in a camo bag.

An Ordnance Survey map for the location is available at this web site..
