Bath is Twinned with Alkmaar which is celebrating it's 750th
anniversary this year (2004). There is an Alkmaar Twin City cache
here.
Bath was built by the Romans around its hot spring waters around
2,000 years ago. The Saxons built a huge Abbey in the 800s which
was the site for the Coronation of the first King of all England,
Edgar, in 973. The Abbey was re-built in the 1400s and still shows
the scars of the English civil war in the 1640s. The Victorians
re-discovered the Roman Baths which have since been restored to a
magnificent condition.
Bath became popular again in the 1700s due to its "restorative
waters", resulting in a massive building programme. All buildings
were constructed in a similar style, in a similar stone, resulting
in its beautiful architecture. The Royal Crescent, Pump Rooms,
Theatre Royal and Assembley Rooms are particularly recommended. For
more information on the City of Bath visit this web site.
The cache is located with excellent views over Bath on the
Cotswold Way. It is close to Bath (Lansdown) Racecourse, which may
complicate the approach to the cache on racedays (although I did
place the cache on a raceday and walked straight through the middle
of the racecourse without a problem. More information about the
Racecourse is here.
An Ordnance Survey map for the parking location is available at
this web site.
