This is the second in a series of geocaches placed on Save the County sites thanks to the efforts of Syrwin, who conceived of the series and obtained permission from STC to place Geocaches at selected sites. Syrwin graciously allowed us to place this second in his STC series.
The Save The County Land Trust (now known as the Central New York Land Trust) is a non-governmental, not for profit organization that promotes ecological diversity and active stewardship by acquiring and preserving natural areas in Onondaga and surrounding counties for education, scientific inquiry, biological conservation, and appropriate recreational use. Since its founding in 1972, STC has acquired and preserved over 2,500 acres of land in 37 natural areas.
Located in the Town of Pompey, “Old Fly Marsh”, a 77 acre area with a 45 acre marsh, is a regular resting spot for migrating waterfowl. Also included is a mature forest with a variety of plants. There are mulched trails, boardwalks, and lookouts.
To get to Old Fly Marsh, from US 20 at Pompey Center, head south on Cemetery Road (Cemetery Road is just east of NY 91) for two miles and turn left onto No. 5 West Road. The parking lot is 1/4 mile east of the intersection on the north side of the road (N42° 52.389’, W075° 59.684’).
Stay on the trail until you’re less than 100 feet from the cache. STC # 2 has a marsh theme: waterfowl, turtles, dragonflies, frogs, fish, butterflies, wildflowers...trades that maintain the theme are appreciated!
