Friedhof der Namenlosen Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

PlanetEarth: We checked everything and found out that the object of stage 1 is not there anymore and that the hiding place (the old tree stump) had been vandalized and there are lots of litter around. I didn't feel very comfortable...[:O][:(]

Due to the above reasons we decided to archive the cache and not to install a new box at a new hiding place...

Sincere thanks are given to them all who had vistited the cache. [:D]

Kind regards, PlanetEarth & Team

Geocache Description:

The Cache is located near "Hafen Albern" in the mosteast part of Vienna. The area is of main historical interest.

The "Cemetery for the Unknown" is the one and only cemetery of the world (!), where only the dead of a river (Danube) were buried. Causes of death were drowning, suicide and crime. In former times the washed up dead were buried here in this cemetery. There are no funerals any more. Today the area is a memorial place. Please keep that in mind and act in decency! Maybe you want to light a candle for the unfortunates.

More details about the area can be found at:
http://www.unbekannteswien.at/archiv/11-98/themen/18/textthema.html (in german).

You can reach the cache area by public transport. It takes long and is therefore not recommended by me. Those coming by car can use the highway exit "Simmeringer Haide". Finally follow the signs to "Hafen Albern" and park at the given coordinates. An inn is very close to the parking area.

The trail is most of it`s length a gravel walk. For the last part before the cache you have to leave the way. No special equipment is needed. Dogs are not allowed. Length: below 3 km, no difference in height.

NB: The above difficulty and terrain rating was done with the rating program from geocaching.com. To be internationally comparable I´m using this result. (See the discussion in the forum also.) My personal opinion is a rating of 2 stars for difficulty and 1.5 stars for terrain.

Stage 1: An unknown tragedy?
N1 = 48° 09.576´
E1 = 16° 30.205´
At the given coordinates you will see the memorial for two persons. What had happened? We don´t know...
Transform both names of the unfortunates into numbers (a=1, b=2,...z=26). Take the corresponding number of 4th letter of the name of the first person. Call this number A.
Do exactly the same for the second person. Call this number C.
Now subtract the cooresponding number of the 5th letter of the first person from the corresponding number of the 2nd letter of this person. Multiply the result by 2 and call the new result G.
Finally divide the corresponding number of the last letter of the 2nd person by 7 and call the result H.

Stage 2: The old cemetery
N2 = 48° 09.589´
E2 = 16° 30.190´
Here you see a tablet which shows the number of the dead which were buried here more than a century ago right under your feet. Add the first and the last digit and subtract the middle digit from this sum. The result is B. Take the last digit of the year as E.

Stage 3: The real tragedy
N3 = 48° 09.566´
E3 = 16° 30.146´
Look for an epitaph for a person who was drowned by somebody. Add the day and month at which this unfortunate person died. Call the result D. Take the age at which this person died and take the crossfoot. Call this number F.

Stage 4: The cache
Now you should be ready to calculate the final stage.
N4 = 48° 0A.BCD´
E4 = 16° 3E.FGH´
The cache is located in distance outside the cemetery area.

The cache initially contains:
  • cachenote (please don´t remove)
  • logbook (please don´t remove)
  • pencil (please don´t remove)
  • mouse
  • bell
  • necklace from "Clochard"
Good luck and happy caching, PlanetEarth
