GeoDocNL: Beste Geocachers,

Aan alle mooie dingen komt eens een einde. Zo ook aan deze Kraterbos cache. De cache heeft bijna 6 jaar bestaan en is ruim 350x bezocht. Een mooi eindresultaat lijkt me. Eventuele travelbugs zal ik naar een andere cache overbrengen.

Hierbij bedank ik alle Geocachers voor hun bezoeken, de logs en de foto's.

Een bijzondere gebeurtenis...

An unusual event...

Op 1 december 1965, ’s middags om 3 uur, ontstaan in de buurt van de boorlocatie ’t Haantje van de Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij spontaan molshopen. Het is een teken dat er iets heel ergs fout gaat en de boorinstallatie wordt met spoed ontruimd. Bij de boorput ontsnapt gas uit de bodem. Plotseling ontstaat er een krater in de grond met een doorsnede van ca. 30 meter. Een enorme fontein van water, modder en gas spuit met een ongelofelijk kabaal de lucht in. De 48 meter hoge boortoren wankelt even, zakt schuin weg en breekt doormidden. De toren verdwijnt met donderend geweld geheel in de diepte, samen met enkele caravans. Na een korte onderbreking begint de krater weer gas en modder te spuiten. Het duurt ca. 3 maanden voordat men deze blow-out onder kontrole heeft. Het terrein kreeg het aanzien van een maanlandschap.

Het gas wat op een diepte van bijna 2 kilometer werd aangeboord had een druk van ca. 300 bar, tweemaal zo veel als verwacht. De gebruikelijke voorzorgsmaatregelen bleken ditmaal onvoldoende. Via een tweede schuin geboord gat kon men zware boorvloeistof in de eerste boring pompen. Daarna werd de spuiter gestopt door aan de oppervlakte grote hoeveelheden beton in de krater te storten.

Het ronde weilandje in het Kraterbos is de plaats van de feitelijke blow-out. Het vennetje is ontstaan doordat hier de benodigde grond is gehaald voor het dichten van de kratergaten en egalisatie van het terrein. SBB laat de natuur sinds 1966 zijn gang gaan, slechts 1x per jaar wordt er gemaaid. Verrassend was het vóórkomen van de rietorchis, normaliter zeer zeldzaam in deze regio. Loop daarom niet over het veldje SVP.

Op N 52°48,235 E 006°50,542 is de aanwijzing te vinden waar de feitelijke cache, een metalen ammobox, verborgen ligt.

And the oilderrick disappeared...

On december 1th of 1965, 03.00 pm, in the surroundings of the oilderrick ‘t Haantje of the Dutch Oil Company spontaneously molehills starts growing. Something is going to be very bad and the installation is evacuated. Gas is leaking out of the ground. Suddenly a large crater is formed with a diameter of 30 m. A huge fountain of water, mud and gas is blown in the air with an incredible noise. The 48 m high oilderrick wobbles for a moment and breakes apart. It disappeares completely into the depth of the earth with a thunderous noise, together with a number of trailers. After a short break the crater starts squirting gas and mud again. It takes 3 months before they got this blowout under control. Afterwards the field looked like the surface of the moon.

The pressure of the gas on a depth of 2 km was 300 bar, twice as high as expected. The normal precautions were not sufficient. By way of a second oblique borehole they pumped in heavy drillingfluid. The blowout was terminated by dumping large amounts of concrete in the crater.

The circular grassland is the spot of the actual blowout. The small lake is the remainder of the excavation for sand needed for restoration and egalisation of the surroundings. Since then nature can develop spontaneously, they mowe only once a year. Unexpected orchids (‘rietorchis’) originated here. So please don’t walk across the field.

On N 52°48.235 E 006°50.542 you can find the clue for locating the stash, a metal ammobox.
