The cache is designed to be reachable in winter too (add 0,5 to terrain difficulty
in winter). From the start to the cache there is a change in elevation of about
450 meters. As the Gerlitzen is a "family friendly" mountain, the
way up is not difficult. Good shoes is all you need.
Don't forget to take a look at the Gerlitzen webcam to check the conditions.
The "Kanzelhöhe" (on the half elevation of the mountain Gerlitzen)
is located about 10 km NE of Villach near the lake Ossiacher See. There are
several possibilities to get to the start location which is near the Kanzelhöhe:
- Mountain bike on forest road (my favourite
track):
Start at N46 39.533 E13 53.955 and continue via N46 39.770 E13 53.905, N46
40.101 E13 54.290, N46 40.735 E13 55.197, N46 40.576 E13 54.380 and N46 40.961
E13 54.934 until you reach stage 1.
- Car or mountain bike on mountain road
Start in Treffen (N46 40.288 E13 50.960) and follow the signs "Gerlitzen".
The 9 km mountain road is a little easier by mountain bike than the first
option but less attractive as it is an asphalt street. If you go by car you
have to pay a toll.
- Cable railway in Annenheim
Start in Annenheim (N46 39.550 E13 54.075). The cable
railway takes you right up to the Kanzelhöhe in about 10 minutes.
Stage 1: Start
N1 = N46 40.860
E1 = E13 54.315
Find out how long the wire rope is and divide it by 100. The result is
S.
Stage 2:
N2 = N1 + (S*10) + (S*5) + 10
E2 = E2 + (S*10) + 30
Look for a wooden sign with a telephone number. Instead of calling this number
just calculate the crossfoot of the complete number. The result is E.
Stage 3:
N3 = N2 + (E*3) - S
E3 = E2 - (E+7) / 2
How long is the cross-country ski run from this point? The length is L.
Stage 4:
N4 = N3 - E - L + 1
E4 = E3 - (S*4) + (L*2)
At this stage you have to look up. The number is U.
Stage 5:
N5 = N4 + (E*10) - (U*6) + 1
E5 = E4 + (S*10) + (U*11)
Here you are standing close to a high construction again. The number is R.
Stage 6:
N6 = N5 + (R*10) - (L*2) + E
E6 = E5 + (E*6) + R - 2
You will find a metal plate with an inscription at a door. In the second line
there is a four digit number. The crossfoot of this number is G.
Stage 7: Cache location
N7 = N6 + (G+E+R+L+E) + 44
E7 = E6 + (R+U+L+E+S) + 4 + G + 4
The cache is a small jar (approx. 10x5x5cm).
Have fun on the Gerlitzen :-)
