Geocache Description:

Have the "yen" to see a yen? How about the obsolete Deutschmark? A Greek drachma strike your fancy? Then visit the Domingo Baca Cabin Cash-Cache! A relatively easy 1.1 mile hike from Albuquerque's North-East Heights Elena Gallegos Open Space Park to the Domingo Baca cabin ruins, nestled in the green and sometimes wet Domingo Baca Canyon. Who was Domingo Baca - an old sheepherder, reclusive miner, or very early real estate developer? Use your imagination!

Starting point is the north parking lot at Elena Gallegos [parking fee area … $1 weekdays, $2 weekends]. Elena Gallegos can be found east of Tramway Road, just north of Acadamy Blvd. To locate the parking area, take a ¾ turn around the gate shack and proceed north to: 35 09’57.0/106 28’23’6. Take trail 230A [not marked … it’s the obvious trail which starts about the center north side of the parking area between several thick posts, [near an old wind sock]. This trail leads north a few hundred feet, then turns east and eventually reaches the junction with trail #230. Take trail #230 north until you reach the Sandia Forest Wilderness Area gate at: 35 10’16.0/106 28’00.5. Cross into the Wilderness and continue north on the obvious-and sometimes marked-Domingo Baca trail around the large hill to the east at which point the trail then turns east and leads mildly upward into the canyon.. Continue on to the Domingo Baca Cabin ruins: 35 10’48.2/106 27’43.0.

Please leave/take COINS OR BILLS ONLY, which have preferably little commercial value [travel bugs OK]. The usual cautions about sun, snakes, and hostile vegetation apply. Please use discretion when locating the cache, this is a popular area, especially on weekends. This particular canyon eventually leads to another cache—the TWA crash site. Enjoy the views, especially to the east!
