Waid Recreation Area near Rocky Mount, VA
This is a good cache for anyone on a mountain bike or if you just
want a nice hike on a trail. It's located just off the red trail in
Waid Recreation Area in Franklin County just outside of Rocky
Mount. I often ride this trail in the evening after work when the
sun is setting, thus the name.
Enter the park about 1/2 mile until you see the "trail parking"
sign on your left. Go up the hill to the upper parking area where
the red trail begins. Follow the trail up the hill, across the road
and into the woods. When you come to a park bench the trail forks,
forming a loop along the ridge. "When you come to a fork in the
road, take it", said Yogi Berra. Either fork will get you to the
cache; it's about half way around. From the parking lot to the
cache via the right fork, 0.5 mile; the left fork is 0.2 longer.
The Pigg River flows by the park and this section of the river is
a stocked trout stream. It's also the location of the annual Pigg
River Ramble, a canoe, kayak, and float race.
