Geocache Description:

What happened to the Liberator Express that night?

October 20, 1944. Captain Truett K Bullock and captain Thomas C Campbell are in command of a C-87, which also goes by the name of "Liberator Express". With a wingspan of about 34 meters, and a length of 20 meters, their cargo aeroplane isn't exactly small. Its average cargo capacity is about 5000 kilos. World War II is raging, and Bullock and Campbell have been sent on a secret mission. A mission that had brought them to Sweden. They aren't alone though. Along with four other aeroplanes, they have set their destination to Bromma just outside Stockholm. The airport is buzzling with activity due to the war, so most likely, they had been there before. But this time is different. There's a bad storm closing in on them. And as a consequence thereof, there is more bad news to come. It comes to their knowledge that they will not receive permission to land at Bromma airport due to the bad weather. Instead, they will have to fly all the way to Torslanda, Gothenburg.

As the big C-87 yaws and heads for Torslanda, the pilots certainly understand this would mean a troublesome flight defying the storm. Unfortunately, their fears are confirmed. Their plane driven by the four powerful engines struggles bravely through the tough weather that night, and they are soon to arrive. But then, something goes terribly wrong. The pilots do their uttermost to keep her in the air, but they lose control over her and she goes down in the woods not far from the town of Alingsås.

A tragedy had taken place. There were no survivors. Details about the crash were immediately classified as secret.

The cache is placed at the site of the mysterious crash. Over 60 years have passed now, but the questions still remain... Was there some other reason than the bad weather that caused the plane to crash? What was their mission? Why were there six men aboard, as the crew of a C-87 normally consisted of only four? What did they transport? Maybe a visit at the crash site will give any clues to the mystery...

This cache is rated.
