Salty Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Two of the world's largest salt piles. No skiing allowed.

Every day you eat salt, but did you ever wonder where it came from? There's a good chance that the salt on your fries came from Newark, California.

As you near the cache, look to your left, behind the tall salt refinery building you will see Morton's salt piles. The piles are each 90 feet tall and contain up to 700,000 tons of 99.5% pure salt collected from the evaporator ponds nearby in the bay. These piles are the end of a three month harvest process that was the end of a 5 year solar evaporation process. When the pile gets small as it is now in late 2003, you know that harvest time is coming. You can read about it at the Cargill Salt page.

To find this cache, you DO NOT need to go on the other side of the barbed-wire fence surrounding the cooling pond.

Please maintain the cache quality.
Trade up, trade even or don't trade. No Cachetrash!
