This cache was planted to replace the original 'Good Old Granite' that unfortunately was plundered and burnt.
This cache can be accessed by a 2.5km (approx.) walk or by a longer more scenic 6km round trip. Allow plenty of time as there are some interesting things to see.
n 1891 quarrying began for Woolmai’s pink granite which is considered equal to the best in the world. Holes were drilled in the granite and then plugged with wooden pegs. When the tide came in the pegs would swell and split rocks off the granite. Some blocks weighed from five to ten tons each! Sailing ships were brought in to a jetty, built of granite, at high tide. At low tide a tramline was revealed and up to fifty tons of rock were loaded using trolleys and a crane. The ship sailed off on the next high tide for the two-day trip to Little Dock at the foot of Spencer Street, Melbourne. When a new skipper and crew took over the Kermandie in 1892 and, on their second trip, ignored advice to secure their cargo in heavy seas, they and their ship disappeared without trace, most probably capsized. After this disaster, quarrying ceased at Woolami and the quarry reverted to nature.
