Cache is in Quarry Head in Wilton. Take route 33 until you see mailbox number 760. Turn East and follow the driveway. Please drive slowly past the houses.
This cache is not for young children as it requires climbing the rock jumble.
If you stand by the old house foundation and look over the ledge you can see Long Island and the Sound.
"This is the site of Wilton's most notable quarry, which was active from the early 1700's until the end of the last century. Millstones were quarried here in the 1700's to grind rye and corn in the area grist mills of Norwalk, Wilton, and Ridgefield. One of the stones quarried and finished during this period was discovered to have a crack. It was discarded by the side of the road which became known as the 'road where the millstone is' now called Millstone Road......Evidence of the quarrying can still be seen in the drill holes and long flat planes of the huge granite ledges."
My original plan was to locate this cache much higher up the rock field. HOWEVER, as I was scouting the area I realized I had entered the terrain of a coyote. In fact, I came face to face with her. Discretion being the bettor part of valor, (and not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable in what was obviously part of her home territory) I have placed the cache about half-way down (or halfway up). The bushwacking section is tough; not for kids.
This cache is a nod to "Cathedral in the Pines" which was
a) a cache that drove me nuts
b) a ton of fun.
