Geocache Description:

A nice easy cache for our first, in Ashridge National Park. It's a gentle wander through the woods where deer freely roam.

Ashridge was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1283 by Earl Edmund of Cornwall, nephew of Henry III, who owned Berkhamstead Castle (have a go at Dan & Pid's Rampart Rise at the castle).

The College of Bonhommes, as it was originally called, housed a holy relic that attracted pilgrims in great numbers. Following the Dissolution it became a royal house, used by the young Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth I. She disposed of the property in 1575.

From 1604 to 1848 the Egertons, as Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater, owned the vast estate straddling the Hertfordshire - Buckinghamshire border.

When the 3rd Earl Brownlow died in 1921, the estate was broken up and much of it was bought by the National Trust.

During World War 2 the building served as an emergency hospital and today it is an established management college.
