The rough and tumble lumber town of St. Maries had some unionizing activities during WWI.
This sign on a St. Maries street corner describes a bit of local strife back when unions were considered un-American by Big Business - and by state and federal forces. Calling out the troops meant restoring order at the end of a truncheon. Unsafe working conditions were standard in most heavy industry, and it took decades to change the status quo.
Log this virtual cache by emailing me two items:
Of what crime was the Wobblies' secretary convicted in 1918?
Using www.iww.org, where is the closest state office of the IWW today?
Special thanks to Chumpo for this web link concerning IWW action in Spokane around this time.
