Geocache Description:

Traditional cache hidden close to the Folly Tower above Pontypool, great views of the surrounding area.

The Folly Tower occupies a commanding viewpoint above Pontypool, originally built in the 18th century by the Hanbury family of Park House, Pontypool.

Regrettably, at the beginning of the 2nd world war the original tower was demolished because it was believed to be a useful landmark for enemy aeroplanes seeking to raid the nearby Royal Ordnance factory at Glascoed.

Various efforts were made to rebuild the tower, but it was only completed again in 1994.

The easiest route to the Folly is by road through Penygarn and Trevethin, the road runs to within a few hundred yards of the tower with a small car park at SO 291 026.

A more interesting walk for the more energetic is to walk up from Pontypool Leisure Centre (SO 285 007) through Pontypool Park visiting the Shell Grotto on the way.

Cache is in an opaque plastic tupperware type box with a white lid & contains :

Various pens , pencils, novelty crayons, (and other useful stationery items that Cwmbran ASDA had last Saturday!), a selection of Scouty type badges, log book, cache cards, and a travel bug called Horrace who is hoping to start his worldwide adventures from here!

Good luck!
