VT-1 Yaphank Pine Barrens Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

ClockworkSoul: This cache has been pillaged yet again, by an animal it looks like.

I'm replacing it with a more difficult multi-cache in the same area.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a very low-traffic Suffolk County forest (I've never seen another soul in there). The forest itself is accessable at 2 points: the end of Rustic Rd (N40°51.373 W072°56.727) or from Middle Island-Yaphank Road (N40°51.243 W072°56.302). The terrain is very variable and alternates between dense oak forest and pine barren (the cache is hidden in the latter). The trails can be slightly sandy, but are generally clear of growth.

The cache itself is a small tupperware container containing:

An unassigned pair of travel bug tags
A pretty nice (and entirely unused) wristwatch (*)
Steel Slinky
2 purple .96mm Dunlop guitar picks
3 state quarters
Junk jewelery brooch
Log book and pen

* My wife won't let me wear it since she thought it was ugly, so I offer it to you.

For history buffs, there is a ruin of a small Prohibition era domicile accessible at N40°51.224 W072°56.365 and N40°51.218 W072°56.313. The area is rich with old bottles, though there is some evidence of some teenagers using it as a party hangout up until the early 1970's. If anybody has any more historical data about this site, I would be very grateful for it.

This was originally going to be the hiding place for the cache, but it was too close to the road, too overgrown, and has too much broken glass.

Also, if you walk west along the east-west path (you'll know it), you'll hit Carmen's River. It's very pretty.
