Geocache Description:

This train themed cache has derailed off a section of the Three Notch Trail. St. Mary's County has not had rails since 1965 although remnants of the former tracks bed is in use today including now by geocachers.

There is a movement to resurrect parts of the former Three Notch railbed for Rails to Trails use. We have done some research and traveled to various parts of these remnants. All are sadly underkept and very polluted with junk. Even the section we finally picked so it is a great Cache in and Trash out site although you may need a dump truck. In the northern part of the county we talked with homeowners who border the trail and they are frankly not happy about the prospect of a rails to trails section in their area and frankly we agreed. St. Marys has been so developed in the past ten years that the sections to convert are quickly disappearing. We placed the cache in a section that is some pretty woodland but sadly it is speckled with some garbage. We just wanted to draw light to the proposed project. This cache may be our shortest walk ever for cachers but don't let that deceive you. The inventory in the cache includes: 8 Railroad Bandanas 1 Railroad Depot Memories Cassette 2 Little Train Sticker Books 1 Great Mills Express Travel Bug Note: The cache is a wee bit undersized. Below are links that will give you the history of St. Marys Railroads when they existed and also the section of the trail we placed the cache near: http://www.geocities.com/~michael_adams/info.html http://www.geocities.com/~michael_adams/section01report.html
