Geocache Description:

July 13th, sunrise to sunset.. A Kayak/canoe/watercraft family picnic located on the beautiful White Memorial Foundation Property, in the Town of Litchfield, CT. Most of the caches in this area are accessible by water only, so bring your own canoes etc. The entrance is located 2 ½ miles west of the center of Litchfield on Rt. 202.

The White Foundation comprise 4,000 acres of Fields, Forests, Waters, 35 miles of trails, (biking, hiking, horse trails) a Nature Museum as well as camp grounds, and other facilities. The aviary contains a Great Horned Owl and a Red Tailed Hawk.

The picnic grounds are open to the public and although large in area, do not have many picnic tables close together. We recommend bringing your own tables and chairs. There are no fireplaces or grills either, you must bring your own. There is fresh water and out houses; but for a small entrance fee of $4.00 at the museum, indoor plumbing is available. ($2.00 for kids). The Museum is well worth the admission fee and has many exhibits of Ct’s flora and fauna.

This started out to be a small gathering of known cachers and appears as if it is very popular. Our small circle of Friends has become a Large circumference. Our intentions are to make this event self sufficient with as little organization as necessary. It would be nice to see everyone at lunch time, beginning at 11:30 for some socializing.

The following are coordinates of key locations. The many cache locations can be found the usual way.

Park Entrance N41 43.842 /W73 13.018
Picnic Ground N41 43.390 /W73 12.716
Butterfly Garden trail N41 43.360 /W73 12.753
Canoe Launch Site N41 43.500 /W73 12.328

The launch site is about half way between the northern most and southern most river caches. We would recommend choosing one half for the morning and the other for the afternoon. This will spread the crowds and possible river congestion. Don’t forget the land based caches too. Thanks to ZingerHead, Ct A-Team, and SkyTrek for their efforts and contributions. If you plan it right it can be an easy and fun 10+ cache day for everyone.

The Bantam River is slow moving, flat water, except for the Beaver Dam obstacles. Wildlife abounds on the preserve and you may see Osprey, Kingfisher, Beaver, Muskrats, Ducks, Turtles, Fish, Heron, etc.
