Geocache Description:

This is the current home of the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and the OLD JAIL MUSEUM.

This jail was built in 1885-1887 and was still being used as I grew up in Gonzales. Incredibly, inmates in Gonzales called this place home up until 1975. It was a far cry from todays modern jails. The museum hours are:
M- F 8:00-5:00
Sat 8:30-4:00
Sun 1:00-4:00
You DO NOT need to go inside to get credit for this cache. Just email me the year that the museum was placed in the National Register of Historic Places.

A side note about the jail. The last legal hanging in Gonzales was in 1921. Albert Howard claimed he was an innocent man. He could see the courthouse clock outside his jail window and he became obsessed with the clock, as it counted down the number of hours he had to live. He swore his innocence would be shown by the clock, that none of the four faces would ever keep the same time again if he was hanged. Through the years and after many attempts to fix them, the faces have rarely been consistent.
