In the late 1800's it became a tradition that the first time a ship arrived at this port, the captain would paint the name of his ship on the cliff at dockside. This tradition continues even today. It looks like now, every time a new captain arrives-even if it's a ship that is already on the cliff, they commemorate it with a new sign.
The earliest date I could find on the cliff was 1928, but there is a sign on the dock that shows older ships names, I will post a photo of it when I get my photo developed and scanned. To post this as a find answer this one question. What was the last name of the Sun Princesses Captain when the ship arrived in July of 1983?
