Geocache Description:

This virtual cache will walk you through a very interesting (if not infamous) story from KY's past. It involves an event that has only happened one time in U.S. history, and it happened on the exact spot of the coords above.

To complete this cache you will need to pay a visit to the Kentucky History Center. The Hours of Operation are: Tues - Sat: 10am - 5pm; (closed Sunday & Monday) Sorry they are so limited, but the museum is an attraction worth a day's visit in its own right and it is needed to fully appreciate the story behind this cache.

To log the cache, please e-mail us the correct answers to the questions below ... (through our profile above). You may then go ahead and log it. If there are any questions or mistakes we'll contact you.

  • Begin your journey at the coordinates posted above. What happened on this exact spot so many years ago?
  • From there, find the man referred to, he still stands just a short ways away. Read all sides of his monument. How many things are listed that he was a "Champion of"?
  • Now follow the train tracks (or a bearing of 135 degrees - SE) about 600 ft to the Kentucky History Center. You should now be at coordinates: N 38o 11.938 W 084o 52.506. Go inside the museum and find (or inquire about) more information relating to this tale. Here you will find an exhibit that will tell of the three men convicted for their parts in this story. What piece of evidence is revealed when you press the button here?

...and "Now you know the REST of the story."

If you have to visit while the museum is closed, but the History Center Building is open (Mon-Sat: 8am - 5pm), then you can answer the following alternate question: "In the Hall of Governors, who does it look like this man is staring at?"
