This is tough and rough country, the Red Rock Canyon can only be enjoyed one way, ON FOOT! This hike takes me about 2 hours round trip. The listed mile from the parking lot is one very long and tough mile. I would suggest taking a friend, your cell phone is probably not going to work here. It may be a long time before somebody notices your car has been there a few days. If you break a leg or get snake bitten, it would be nice to have a friend.
You are looking for an OD green plastic tube, 3.5 inches in diameter and 21 inches long. Original contents included 2 policeman's prayers, five camping tools, four Hot Wheels, a singing ball and some webpage cards. The usual pen, pencil, logbook and Geo Cache sheet was included. You will probably want to wear waterproof boots at least six inches high, bring water on hot days and wrap warmly on cold days as this is unforgiving country. You will find a low water crossing at N 38 42.122 W 98 02.145 that will make crossing the first creek much easier. You should approach from the west off of 25th Road and park in the public hunting parking lot. The first .25 miles is relatively easy, walking downhill along the tire tracks to the low water crossing. From there it gets tougher! Be sure to watch out for wildlife, you might see turkeys, quail, pheasant, vultures, hawks, bald eagles, coyotes, deer, beaver, muskrats, fox, box tortisies, bull and leopard frogs and a variety of snakes, including the always testy prairie rattlesnake. Just think and look before placing your hands in rock crevices or around fallen trees. Our rattlesnakes here are small and rarely exceed 18". They are very tough to see and blend in very well. A good tall pair of boots is good insurance for those who are very fearful of these. The area also has a lot of poison ivy in the creek beds, so watch those area as well. You will not have to walk through wooded creek areas, unless you want to. I recommend walking fairly high around the hills, rather than following your GPS straight across country. The walking is much easier, safer and you will see more wildlife. You will find a beaver dam at N 38 41.807 W 98 01.656 that will make your crossing of this creek much easier, actually there are a series of beaver dams here, so pick your best shot and walk carefully. You will see that deer, coyotes, raccoons and other critters also cross on the beaver dams, the prints tell the story. Once across this creek, you are in for some tough cross country hiking, be safe, keep your wits about you and have fun! If you really want to challenge yourself, do this cache from the Horsethief Canyon at Kanopolis State Park!
